The city of Sault Ste. Marie will host the tenth annual Rockin’ Out for Recovery event on October 3, 2023, from 17:00 to 19:00 at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion. This free, community-focused gathering aims to unite individuals, families, service providers, and advocates to celebrate recovery, enhance awareness, and strengthen community ties.

This year’s event marks a decade of collective efforts to promote resilience among those living in recovery. According to a news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Drug Strategy Committee, the initiative seeks to reduce stigma associated with drug use and mental health challenges. “As a community, recovery is something that we all take part in — it’s about hope, healing and supporting one another,” stated Hilary Gordon, the committee’s co-chair. She emphasized that the event not only raises awareness about the community’s challenges but also celebrates the courage and joy that recovery brings.

Event Highlights and Community Impact

The Rockin’ Out for Recovery event is designed as a vibrant community celebration. It will feature live music, cultural performances, and opportunities for connection, showcasing the efforts of local organizations and community partners. Attendees can look forward to special remarks from Mayor Matthew Shoemaker, along with motivational speeches that highlight themes of culture, healing, and recovery.

This annual gathering signifies Sault Ste. Marie’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for those in recovery. The event is more than just a celebration; it reflects the collective determination of the community to address the challenges posed by substance use and to build a compassionate society.

The Sault Ste. Marie Drug Strategy Committee is a collaborative initiative focused on mitigating the harms linked to substance use while supporting pathways to recovery. By engaging health providers, social service agencies, and individuals with lived experience, the committee aims to improve prevention, treatment, and support services, while also tackling stigma surrounding mental health and addiction.

According to the committee, “The goal is to build a healthier, more compassionate community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.” This philosophy underpins the Rockin’ Out for Recovery event, which not only promotes awareness but also demonstrates the community’s collective strength and resilience.

As Sault Ste. Marie marks this significant milestone, the focus remains on creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residents. The event promises to be a powerful reminder of the transformational power of recovery and the importance of unity in addressing community challenges.
