Railway Association of Canada Celebrates Safety and Innovation Achievements
On December 1, 2025, the **Railway Association of Canada** (RAC) recognized outstanding achievements in rail safety and environmental innovation at its annual Safety and Environment Awards ceremony in **Ottawa, Ontario**. This event highlighted the significant contributions of railway companies and professionals who are reshaping the landscape of rail transport in Canada.
The awards reflect the industry’s dedication to enhancing safety and sustainability, showcasing innovative programs and technologies that protect communities and improve operational performance. The RAC emphasized that these efforts are crucial as the country moves towards a safer and more environmentally friendly rail system.
Eric Harvey, President and CEO of the RAC, stated, “Canada’s railways are built on a foundation of innovation, discipline, and pride in the work we do every day. This year’s award recipients demonstrate what is possible when we challenge ourselves to think differently and to lead with purpose.”
Highlights of the 2025 Safety Award Recipients
The Safety Awards honored several organizations for their groundbreaking initiatives. Notable recipients include:
– **Cando Rail & Terminals** with its “Passing Knowledge Initiative.” This virtual safety education program utilizes employee feedback and field observations to enhance safety culture through accessible storytelling that promotes best practices among frontline workers.
– **Metrolinx** received recognition for its “Red Zone Green Zone (RZ/GZ) Program,” which revolutionizes work protection planning and communication within rail corridors. This initiative significantly reduces risks associated with interactions between trains and workers or equipment.
2025 Environment Award Recipients
The Environment Awards recognized companies making strides in ecological responsibility:
– **CN** was praised for its “B.C. Spill Drill and Exercise Program.” This initiative prioritizes community engagement during spill drills, emphasizing collaboration with local stakeholders such as First Nations and municipal governments. The program aims to improve preparedness and response to potential incidents.
– **Cando Rail & Terminals** also received an award for its “Li-Ion 2025” project, which aims to electrify industrial switching operations using lithium-ion battery technology. By retrofitting a diesel locomotive into a zero-emission unit, Cando is setting a standard for sustainable rail operations across Canada.
– **Metrolinx** was recognized for overhauling its Environmental Management System (EMS) to align with the ISO14001 Standard. This comprehensive update includes revisions to the EMS Manual and the development of 11 Environmental Performance Standards.
Additionally, the **NEW ASSOCIATE MEMBER AWARD** went to **TrackSense**, which is transforming railway safety through its innovative data integration platform. This technology enables comprehensive monitoring of railways by integrating multiple data sources, enhancing incident detection and management.
The RAC represents nearly 60 freight and passenger railway companies, transporting millions of passengers and approximately **$380 billion** worth of goods across Canada each year. The association also includes a growing number of industrial railways and supply companies among its members.
As the railway industry continues to evolve, these awards serve as a testament to the commitment of railway professionals to prioritize safety and environmental stewardship, paving the way for a more sustainable future in rail transportation.
