In a poignant story of resilience, Rabbi Leo Dee has rebuilt his life following the tragic deaths of his wife, Lucy, and two daughters, Maia and Rina, in an attack by Hamas terrorists in April 2023. This devastating incident occurred during a family outing in the West Bank and shocked the international community. The Dees are recognized as the first victims of the October 7 attacks, despite their murders occurring six months earlier.

Rabbi Dee, now 53, has transformed his grief into activism, becoming a prominent speaker advocating for other families affected by violence. His journey took a hopeful turn in June when he announced his engagement to Aliza Teplitsky, 43, a Canadian originally from Toronto. Their wedding in August was celebrated by many who were touched by Dee’s story of loss and renewal.

The newlyweds had initially planned a two-week trip to Canada in July. However, escalating tensions in the region, particularly a brief conflict involving Iran, forced them to postpone their visit. After their marriage, they embarked on what they humorously termed a “workingmoon,” combining personal time with public engagements aimed at sharing their story and inspiring others.

During their visit, Rabbi Dee hopes to convey the lessons of healing he has learned, encapsulated in his new book titled “The Seven Facets of Healing.” The book outlines his approach to navigating grief while embracing a new chapter in his life.

Sharing Their Journey

On the North Star podcast, Rabbi Dee and Aliza discussed their unique love story and the healing process that followed their respective tragedies. Rabbi Dee emphasized the importance of community support during difficult times, stating, “Belief in a greater plan helps everyone.”

Their discussions also touched on Rabbi Dee’s criticism of Canada’s recent decision to recognize a Palestinian state, which he described as a misguided move that could further complicate the conflict.

Rabbi Dee shared the details of his family’s tragic loss. On April 7, 2023, during Passover, Hamas terrorists opened fire on his wife’s car, resulting in her death along with that of their daughters. Rabbi Dee and his three surviving children were in a separate vehicle just moments behind, escaping unhurt.

Following this tragedy, Rabbi Dee became an outspoken advocate against terrorism, taking legal action against the Palestinian Authority for its financial support to the families of terrorists. His activism has resonated with many, as he uses his platform to address issues of security and grief.

New Beginnings and Continued Activism

In the wake of his personal loss, Rabbi Dee found purpose in sharing his experiences, leading him to write his book. The seven facets of healing he explores include friends, family, fitness, function, finance, faith, and fun. He believes these elements are crucial for anyone navigating loss and finding a path forward.

Dee’s journey has not only focused on personal healing but has also involved a broader message of unity among the Jewish community. “After the events of October 7, we found ourselves more united than ever,” he remarked, highlighting the resilience of his community.

As the couple continues their tour across Canada, they express gratitude for the support they have received. Aliza, who now shares her life with Rabbi Dee, has also taken on an active role in their public engagements, offering insights into their journey together.

Rabbi Dee’s story resonates deeply as it embodies the possibility of new beginnings even in the face of profound loss. His commitment to advocacy, alongside his newfound happiness, serves as a beacon of hope for many who face similar challenges.
