Paddlers Unite in Oak Bay to Support Children Battling Cancer

On September 6, 2023, a group of dedicated paddlers will embark on a significant journey off the coast of Oak Bay, British Columbia. This event, led by retired pediatrician Oscar Casiro, marks the culmination of a five-month campaign aimed at raising funds and awareness for the Island Kids Cancer Association through the Paddle For Health initiative. Casiro’s goal is to paddle a total of 750 kilometres in his 75th year, intentionally aligning his final trek with the charity’s major annual fundraiser.
Casiro has chosen to support this Victoria-based non-profit, which provides vital assistance to more than 200 families throughout Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands facing the challenges of childhood cancer. As of late August, Casiro was close to reaching his fundraising goal of $22,000, having already surpassed the 700-kilometre mark two weeks ahead of the event.
The Paddle For Health campaign has also made significant strides, nearly achieving its target of $20,000 with $14,000 raised by August 21, 2023. The lead fundraising team, the Elbows SUP! Cadboro Bay Paddlers, has contributed over $5,000 to the cause.
Participants are encouraged to arrive at Willows Beach Park by 8:30 a.m. on September 6. The paddlers will launch from Oak Bay at 9:45 a.m. under the supervision of a dedicated safety crew. The route will take them along the shoreline, past Cattle Point, into Caddy Bay, and ultimately to Gyro Park Beach, where they will take a brief 15-minute break for snacks and stretching before returning to Willows Beach by 12:30 p.m.
Following the paddle, attendees will enjoy food from Deadbeetz Burger, along with prizes, games, and awards for categories such as best costumed team and top fundraisers. Registration for the event includes a voluntary donation of $50, with a $100 contribution earning participants a commemorative T-shirt.
Those interested in supporting this cause can register online at paddleforhealth.ca. Further information about the Island Kids Cancer Association can be found at ikca.ca, while Casiro’s personal fundraising page is accessible at shorturl.at/0qu9F. The event not only aims to raise funds but also to foster a sense of community and support for families impacted by childhood cancer.
