Over 1,000 Children Enjoy Early Halloween Festivities in Hillhurst
More than 1,500 children participated in an early Halloween event in Hillhurst on October 14, 2023, organized by the group Treat Accessibly. This annual Halloween Village aimed to ensure that all children, regardless of their abilities, could experience the joy of trick-or-treating. The event highlighted the importance of inclusivity during the holiday season.
Community members came together to set up tables along the street, handing out candy and creating a festive atmosphere. The initiative was designed to foster a sense of belonging and accessibility for everyone. Siena Padulo, co-founder of Treat Accessibly, emphasized the significance of such events, stating, “Having one of these villages shows to both people that have disabilities and those that don’t that there can be an inclusive event for all—and that it’s really simple to do.”
Parents expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to participate in a fully inclusive event. Aaron Li, whose son has cerebral palsy, noted, “He’s excited, and he just gets to come out and just be able to enjoy what a kid should be able to enjoy on Halloween.” This sentiment resonated with many families who attended, highlighting the shared joy of the occasion.
The success of the Halloween Village reflects a growing movement toward making social events more accessible. The community’s commitment to inclusivity is paving the way for future initiatives, ensuring that everyone can partake in the festivities without barriers. As neighborhoods continue to embrace such changes, the hope is that more families will feel empowered to participate in events that celebrate the spirit of community.
The atmosphere during the event was vibrant, filled with laughter and excitement as children dressed in costumes enjoyed the early celebrations. By bringing together families and fostering inclusivity, Hillhurst demonstrated that creating welcoming spaces for all is not only possible but also essential.
