In a stunning performance, the B.C. Lions triumphed over the Calgary Stampeders with a score of 52-23 on March 15, 2024, at McMahon Stadium. Quarterback Nathan Rourke led the charge, scoring three rushing touchdowns and throwing for two more, solidifying his place in Canadian football history by surpassing Russ Jackson’s longstanding record for the most passing yards by a Canadian in a single season.

Rourke completed 20 of 24 pass attempts for an impressive 331 yards, bringing his season total to 3,935 yards—breaking Jackson’s record of 3,641 yards set in 1969. This victory marked the Lions’ seventh consecutive game scoring over 30 points, demonstrating their offensive prowess.

Dominant Lions Offense Overwhelms Stampeders

The Lions showcased their offensive strength early, with Jeremiah Masoli scoring on a one-yard carry and Zander Horvath contributing a spectacular 70-yard rushing touchdown. Justin McInnis caught two touchdown passes, while kicker Sean Whyte added a field goal and five conversion points.

The Stampeders struggled to keep pace, despite Tevin Jones and Quincy Vaughn each scoring touchdowns. Calgary’s kicker, Rene Paredes, managed three field goals, but the team was unable to overcome their two-game losing streak. The loss drops Calgary to a record of 8-5-0.

The game began with the Lions quickly establishing dominance, leading 28-7 at halftime in front of an announced attendance of 23,554. B.C. scored on their opening drive when Rourke capped a six-play, 71-yard march with a one-yard touchdown run. Despite being without leading rusher James Butler due to injury, the Lions’ efficient offense overwhelmed the Stampeders.

Injuries Disrupt Stampeders’ Momentum

The Stampeders faced additional challenges during the match, as starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. left the game after a knee injury on a third-quarter carry. Adams completed 11 of 16 passes for 125 yards before his exit, which was prompted by the injury spotter after he was kneed during a run. Backup P.J. Walker took over, completing 8 of 9 passes for 64 yards but also appeared to sustain an injury late in the game, forcing Vaughn to step in.

The game saw a series of turnovers, with Adams throwing two interceptions in the first quarter. The Lions capitalized on these mistakes, scoring on their second possession after Masoli’s one-yard plunge, extending their lead to 14-0. Rourke then broke through the Stampeders’ defense with a 26-yard scoring run, further widening the gap.

Despite some offensive contributions from Calgary, including a touchdown pass from Walker to Jones early in the fourth quarter, the Lions maintained control. Rourke later connected with McInnis for an 11-yard touchdown, sealing the game as Horvath added his long touchdown run.

Looking ahead, the Lions will face the Toronto Argonauts, while the Stampeders will travel to take on the Montreal Alouettes next Friday. As the CFL season progresses, Rourke’s record-breaking performance adds a significant chapter to Canadian football history.
