A newly launched beauty event, the Glam and Glow, took place in Prince Albert on March 6, 2024, showcasing a vibrant gathering of local vendors and community members. The six-hour event, held at Plaza 88, featured 15 local vendors and offered a variety of activities for families, along with unique shopping opportunities.

Organized by Maya Rabbitskin, who is also the owner of Sacred Shears, the event aimed to foster connections among those in the beauty industry while providing valuable services to the community. Rabbitskin noted that when she first proposed the idea for a low-cost event, some thought it might be a scam. “I just like being able to make a difference in somebody’s life. Even if it’s just a quick haircut, that makes a huge difference for somebody,” she remarked.

Sacred Shears is a new venture that not only operates in Prince Albert but also conducts mobile clinics in various First Nations communities and offers lice clinics. During the Glam and Glow event, free haircuts were provided for young children and seniors, making it accessible to those who might otherwise struggle to afford such services.

The event also featured local nail technicians and makeup experts. Kendle Dumont, owner of Nails by Shorty, appreciated the inclusive nature of the event, stating, “It was great today. I think it means a lot, especially getting the community involved, and you know support local.” This sentiment echoed throughout the venue, highlighting the event’s success in drawing attention to local businesses.

One of the seniors benefiting from the free services was Keefe Taylor, who expressed satisfaction with his haircut. “He did a real good job and it was nice talking to him,” Taylor said, referring to his stylist who recently migrated from the Philippines. “You know he’s from the Philippines and just moved to Canada four years ago. He seems to enjoy what he does, it was nice.” Taylor, who had received a less satisfactory haircut just two weeks prior, left the event much happier with his new style.

The Glam and Glow event reflects a growing trend of community-focused initiatives that not only provide services but also encourage local engagement and support for small businesses. As Rabbitskin continues to develop Sacred Shears, her commitment to making a difference in the community resonates with attendees and participants alike. This event stands as a testament to the power of local collaboration and the positive impact it can have on individuals and families in Prince Albert.
