The Langley community is rallying together to raise funds for cancer care, inspired by the personal journey of local resident Candy Foster. After experiencing alarming symptoms that led to an urgent ultrasound, Foster was admitted to Langley Memorial Hospital, where she underwent surgery. Initially suspected of having appendicitis, her diagnosis quickly escalated as she faced two separate battles with cancer—first colon cancer, followed by breast cancer.

Dr. Steve Hansen’s words still ring in my ears: ‘We’re going to get to the bottom of this, and we’re going to figure it out,'” Foster recalls, expressing her gratitude for the support she received. “That’s exactly what I needed to hear.”

Fundraising for Essential Medical Equipment

Foster was declared cancer-free in June 2019, but her journey has motivated her to give back to the hospital that provided her with care. This fall, she is collaborating with the Langley Community Health & Hospital Foundation to raise funds for the hospital’s areas of greatest need, particularly for equipment essential for diagnosing and treating cancer patients.

“This journey taught me so much about resilience, faith, and the power of the love of my family and friends,” Foster explains. “Most of all, my experiences opened my eyes to the dedication and compassion of the doctors and nurses at Langley Memorial Hospital.”

Recognizing the ongoing need for updated medical equipment, the Fort Langley Lions have pledged to match every donation up to $40,000. This initiative aims to ensure that medical teams have access to the necessary tools to provide the best possible care as the population and demand for procedures continue to grow.

Community Support and Challenges Ahead

Foster emphasizes the importance of community support: “A decade later, when I look back at the whirlwind journey of my health and recovery, I’m so grateful that I was able to receive care here, close to home.” She highlights the invaluable contributions of nurses, doctors, and caregivers at Langley Memorial Hospital, stating, “When you join me and the Fort Langley Lions in supporting the purchase of medical tools used in cancer surgeries and diagnosis, you’re honoring Langley Memorial Hospital’s medical staff for their hard work.”

This year, fundraising efforts are particularly critical as the community navigates challenges such as the Canada Post strike, which can impact charities during their most significant fundraising period. According to the Foundation, the lack of donations could hinder the acquisition of essential medical equipment, patient comfort items, and staff education programs.

To contribute to this vital cause, community members can securely donate online at LCHHFoundation.com/donate. Donors will receive a tax receipt for the 2025 tax year, ensuring that their contributions have a lasting impact on cancer care in Langley.
