The Kingston Whig-Standard has launched its annual Christmas hampers campaign, setting an ambitious goal of $230,000 to support families in need during the holiday season. This initiative, in partnership with The Salvation Army, aims to provide assistance to those who may find the festive period particularly challenging.

For over three decades, the Whig has collaborated with The Salvation Army to enhance the lives of vulnerable individuals in the Kingston community. As the holiday season approaches, the necessity of this partnership and the spirit of giving become increasingly significant. The campaign, known as the Jerome Taylor Memorial/Whig-Standard Christmas Hampers of Hope Fund, seeks to bring hope and joy to those who require it most.

Community Needs and Evolving Traditions

Jan Murphy, the editor-in-chief of the Kingston Whig-Standard, emphasized the importance of recognizing the growing needs within the community. “In my first year as editor-in-chief, I have gained a deeper understanding of the many challenges our most vulnerable residents face,” Murphy stated. “Numerous organizations and individuals are tirelessly working to provide support.”

The campaign acknowledges that families’ needs and holiday traditions have evolved, particularly regarding food choices and celebrations. This adaptation is crucial for ensuring that the support provided is relevant and effective. The funds raised will allow for the distribution of Christmas gift cards to upwards of 3,000 households, directly impacting families across Kingston.

The Whig extends its heartfelt gratitude to all supporters who have contributed over the years, underscoring the collective impact of community involvement. The initiative not only aids individuals and families but also fosters a sense of unity and compassion within Kingston.

How to Contribute

To support this year’s campaign, the community is encouraged to donate. Cheques should be made payable to “The Salvation Army Kingston – Hamper Fund” and can be dropped off or mailed to:
