Kelowna Women’s Shelter Launches New Thrift Store to Support Victims

A new thrift store opened its doors on September 13, 2023, in Kelowna, British Columbia, aimed at supporting those affected by domestic violence. The Kelowna Women’s Shelter (KWS) launched the store at 102-1021 Ellis Street during a grand opening that drew significant community interest.
Executive Director Michelle Dickie expressed her enthusiasm about the store’s opening, stating, “We are so excited. It has been part of our strategic plan to find a new space for a thrift store.” The event saw a bustling turnout, indicating strong community support for the initiative. Dickie noted, “We’ve just thrilled with the response that we’ve gotten today, we’ve had stories, we’ve had excitement, and the support from the community means so much.”
KWS has been dedicated to providing essential services for women and children who experience domestic violence. With the new thrift store, every dollar from purchases directly funds KWS’s programs and services. Dickie highlighted the significance of this initiative, saying, “The goal is to be able to provide more spaces to support our community for donations and support.”
While acknowledging the unfortunate necessity of these services, Dickie emphasized the importance of raising awareness about domestic violence. “Unfortunately, we do have to provide these services to the community, but by creating these conversations, we bring awareness to domestic violence and that it’s wrong and that there are doors open and people can reach out for support and help,” she stated.
In addition to the thrift store, KWS is set to open an adjacent community space, which will enhance the organization’s educational and prevention programs. This expansion aims to further support individuals affected by domestic violence and educate the public on the issue.
The thrift store operates from Monday to Saturday, with hours from 10:00 to 16:30. It remains closed on Sundays and statutory holidays. Donation drop-off days are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:00 to 14:00, with Saturday drop-offs available by appointment. Interested parties can contact the store at 250-762-8561 for further information.
With this new initiative, the Kelowna Women’s Shelter not only provides vital support but also fosters a community dialogue that encourages individuals to seek help and highlights the ongoing struggle against domestic violence.
