Heather McDonald Leads United Way Greater Toronto into the Future
In May 2023, Heather McDonald assumed the role of president and CEO of United Way Greater Toronto (UWGT), marking a pivotal moment for the organization. Under her leadership, UWGT is set to launch a 10-year strategy aimed at expanding essential services, securing permanent spaces for community organizations, and addressing poverty and inequality. A key component of this ambitious plan is to raise $1.5 billion over the next decade.
McDonald brings over 25 years of experience in the social and human services sector. Prior to joining UWGT, she served as CEO of LOFT Community Services, one of Ontario’s largest providers of supportive housing and mental health services. During her tenure at LOFT, she successfully expanded its housing portfolio and diversified its funding sources. Now, she leads a network of more than 300 agencies supported by UWGT, focusing on strengthening the infrastructure of non-profit organizations.
Building on a Strong Foundation
Reflecting on her career, McDonald shared her journey into social services, beginning with a master’s degree in social work. “I have always been committed to working with people on an individual and community basis to improve their lives,” she explained. Her early experience as a social worker ignited her passion for leadership, leading her to take on roles within United Way-funded organizations that focus on providing supportive housing and outreach.
Recognizing the need for both empathy and business acumen in leadership, McDonald pursued further education at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. This combination of experience and education has equipped her to engage effectively with corporate and philanthropic partners.
When asked about her decision to lead UWGT, McDonald emphasized her admiration for the organization’s collaborative approach and its focus on driving meaningful change in the community. “They were so collaborative, so laser-focused on what they were trying to achieve for our communities,” she noted.
Addressing Community Challenges
As she steps into her new role, McDonald acknowledges the significant challenges facing the Greater Toronto Area. Current economic pressures have resulted in one in ten residents relying on food banks. Many individuals are grappling with the high cost of living, leading to difficult choices between essential needs such as rent and food.
To combat these pressing issues, UWGT has launched an ambitious 10-year strategic plan. Central to this initiative is the establishment of 10 community hubs, which will serve as one-stop shops for social and healthcare services in underserved neighborhoods. These hubs aim to enhance access to services, improve quality, and foster collaboration among organizations.
Moreover, McDonald has identified a critical need for community real estate solutions. Approximately 70% of the organizations supported by UWGT face the risk of losing their physical spaces, which could jeopardize their ability to serve the communities that depend on them. The organization is committed to ensuring the stability of these vital spaces for future generations.
Looking ahead, McDonald expressed enthusiasm for her new role and the opportunity to implement meaningful change. “I’m excited to see the innovative solutions we create with our partners and neighborhoods,” she said. The collaboration with various stakeholders will be essential in realizing the vision for the community hubs and addressing the challenges that lie ahead.
In a time when the community’s needs are greater than ever, McDonald believes that UWGT represents a beacon of hope. “I heard someone say the United Way Greater Toronto is the radical hope that the Greater Toronto Area needs right now,” she reflected. As she embarks on this journey, McDonald is determined to make a lasting impact on the lives of those in the region.
