Halton Multicultural Council Raises $15,000 in Charity Event

The Halton Multicultural Council successfully raised $15,000 during its annual Ride/Walk for Refuge event held on September 30, 2023, at the Burlington Lions Club. This initiative aimed to support local refugees and promote community engagement.
Participants gathered early in the morning, ready to take part in either a cycling or walking route. The event drew a diverse crowd, showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting those in need. Attendees of all ages joined in the fun, fostering a spirit of unity and compassion.
Mayor Marianne Meed Ward expressed her support for the event, stating, “This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to support refugees and celebrate our diversity.” Her remarks highlighted the significance of the event in promoting inclusivity and understanding among residents.
The fundraising efforts were bolstered by the participation of local businesses and volunteers, who donated prizes and refreshments. Many local sponsors contributed to the event, creating an atmosphere of collaboration that resonated throughout the day.
The funds raised will be directed towards essential services for refugees, including housing assistance, language training, and community integration programs. The Halton Multicultural Council emphasized that these resources are crucial for helping newcomers successfully settle into their new environment.
As the event concluded, participants reflected on the positive impact of their contributions. Sarah Thompson, a local resident who participated in the walk, stated, “It feels great to know that we’re making a difference for families who are starting anew in our community.”
The success of the Ride/Walk for Refuge highlights the importance of community involvement in addressing social issues. The Halton Multicultural Council plans to continue organizing similar events to foster awareness and support for refugees in the region.
With a strong turnout and generous donations, the event not only raised significant funds but also reinforced the bonds within the community. The Halton Multicultural Council looks forward to future initiatives that will further unite residents in their efforts to support those in need.
