Grundy County recognized the dedication of several officials and employees at the beginning of 2026, highlighting their significant contributions to the community. Among those honored was John Callahan, who has served as the county coroner for an impressive 30 years. During the ceremony, Drew Muffler, the County Board President, praised Callahan as a vital figure within the community.

“As far as coroners are concerned in Illinois, we have one of the best,” Muffler stated. He emphasized how Callahan consistently supports families during their most challenging moments. “People see John on their worst days, and he has a way of making it better for them. Everyone in this room who lives in this community for any period has, unfortunately, had John Callahan break bad news to them.”

Muffler also acknowledged Callahan’s commitment to ongoing education and community involvement, noting his participation in the United Way and hospice services, as well as his attendance at every Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and Grundy Economic Development Council event.

The ceremony also honored Ann Gill, who has served as a board member for 20 years and is the only Democrat on the board. Muffler described her as a passionate advocate for her community, particularly Coal City and the 3rd District. “Ann is a community person in that she cares deeply about this community,” he said. Gill brings extensive experience from her years as a reporter for the Coal City Courant and her current role at Coal City High School, alongside her active participation in the local theatre department.

Muffler praised Gill for her adaptability and teamwork, stating, “She’s rolled with the punches and truly helped Grundy County stay on track.”

The board also recognized Eric Rasmussen, who has served for 15 years. Muffler characterized Rasmussen as exceptionally kind and a daily demonstration of leadership. “He uses those positions so one helps the other,” Muffler noted, highlighting Rasmussen’s extensive knowledge and seriousness in his responsibilities.

Lastly, Josh Harris celebrated his milestone of five years on the board. Muffler commended Harris for his willingness to assist others and his ability to think creatively. “He’s helped out anybody that’s ever asked for help with anything,” Muffler remarked. “He asks good questions. He thinks outside the box.”

Through this ceremony, Grundy County has reaffirmed its commitment to recognizing the invaluable service of its officials, fostering a culture of appreciation and community engagement. The dedication displayed by Callahan, Gill, Rasmussen, and Harris serves as an inspiration for current and future leaders within the county.
