A grant from the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation has facilitated the visit of acclaimed trumpet player Dr. Stephen Hawk to the Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) for a series of masterclasses and concerts. This initiative aims to enhance the educational experience for students and the local community through direct engagement with a seasoned musician.

The grant was presented by Julia Messina, Executive Director of NCI ARTworks, to Brandon Czubachowski, Director of Jazz Studies at IVCC, alongside Laurie Smudzinski, a member of the Jazz Wind Ensemble who played a pivotal role in organizing the events. This funding is partially supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council, reflecting a collaborative effort to promote the arts in the region.

Dr. Stephen Hawk, originally from Ottawa, Illinois, has an impressive career spanning over 35 years, during which he has performed with prestigious orchestras and jazz bands both in the United States and internationally. His extensive experience includes principal trumpet roles with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony Broadway Orchestra.

Throughout his career, Hawk has toured with notable national productions including “The Bodyguard,” “Kinky Boots,” “Aladdin,” and “Tootsie.” His collaborations extend to legendary jazz figures such as Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, and Arturo Sandoval, as well as performances with entertainment icons like Bob Hope, Ray Charles, and Natalie Cole.

The masterclasses and concerts held at IVCC not only showcase Hawk’s exceptional talent but also serve as an invaluable learning opportunity for students and local musicians. Participants can expect to gain insights into both performance techniques and the intricacies of jazz music from a recognized expert in the field.

This initiative exemplifies the ongoing commitment of NCI ARTworks and its partners to foster artistic education and cultural enrichment within the community. By providing access to high-caliber artists, the program aims to inspire the next generation of musicians and enhance the cultural fabric of the Illinois Valley region.

In conclusion, the collaboration between IVCC, the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation, and NCI ARTworks underscores the importance of community support in bringing world-class talent to local audiences, enriching the cultural landscape and educational opportunities in the area.
