This Thursday, October 16, marks Dress Purple Day, an initiative aimed at raising awareness for vulnerable children, youth, and families in Ontario. Organized by Bruce Grey Child and Family Services in collaboration with the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies (OACAS), this annual campaign encourages individuals and organizations to wear purple as a display of support.

Community Involvement and Awareness

The event emphasizes the collective responsibility of communities, schools, healthcare providers, and social services in nurturing the well-being of young people. In a recent media release, Bruce Grey Child and Family Services stated, “Every child and youth deserves to feel safe, supported, and celebrated.” By participating in Dress Purple Day, attendees can contribute to a culture that protects and strengthens the futures of children.

Participants are encouraged to wear purple while engaging in their daily activities, whether at schools, businesses, or in public spaces. Schools are particularly invited to take part by dressing up and sharing class photos on social media with the hashtags #DressPurpleDay2025, #IDressPurpleBecause, and #SupportOntarioFamilies. Classes that tag @brucegreycfs will have a chance to win a pizza party for the most creative participation.

Support from Local Businesses

Local businesses are also encouraged to join the celebration. By wearing purple and posting their support online, businesses can compete for a prize of coffee and donuts for their office. This community-wide participation aims to spread awareness and demonstrate solidarity in supporting vulnerable populations.

According to the organization’s 2024-25 annual report, as of March 31, 2025, there were 82 children in care, 51 kindship provider homes, and 83 foster care provider homes within the Bruce Grey Child and Family Services network. Additionally, the report noted that from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, there were 10 adoptions completed and 1,109 cases opened for investigation. Approximately 3,000 to 3,400 people in the Grey-Bruce area are involved with these services, highlighting the extensive impact of the organization on local families.
