The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society (VDPACS) is encouraging concertgoers to contribute to a charitable cause during the opening performance of acclaimed poet and spoken word artist Shane Koyczan. Attendees are invited to bring non-perishable food donations to the event, set for 7:30 p.m. on September 24, 2025.

Supported by RBC’s Benevity Causes program, volunteers from the bank will collect donations at the VDPAC’s Okanagan Spirits Foyer, beginning at 6:30 p.m. when the main entrance opens. All contributions will be delivered to the local food bank the following morning, directly benefiting those in need.

Partnership Enhances Community Support

This initiative marks the beginning of a partnership between VDPACS and RBC, which aims to facilitate food bank donations at select performances throughout the 2025-26 SPOTLIGHT and Signature Concerts season. This collaboration highlights RBC’s commitment to community engagement and support for food security.

The myCommunity program, managed through Benevity’s platform, provides RBC employees with opportunities to volunteer and submit requests for charitable donations that can be matched by the bank. Non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply online for support under RBC’s Community Investments or Sponsorships.

“VDPAC was successful and is truly grateful for RBC’s support and partnering in this food security initiative,” stated Jim Harding, executive director of VDPACS. His comments underscore the importance of community collaboration in addressing local needs.

Shane Koyczan: A Voice for Change

Shane Koyczan is renowned for his powerful spoken word performances, which resonate deeply with audiences. His international fame began with his unforgettable presentation at the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies in Vancouver, where his emotional delivery captivated viewers and showcased his exceptional talent.

Since then, Koyczan has embarked on world tours, receiving accolades for his contributions to poetry and spoken word. His artistry not only entertains but also evokes thought and inspires change, making this concert a unique opportunity to engage with both his work and a charitable cause.

As the concert approaches, attendees are reminded that their contributions can make a significant impact on the lives of those facing food insecurity. The collaboration between VDPACS and RBC exemplifies how the arts can serve as a platform for social good, encouraging community members to come together for a meaningful cause.
