A recent CrossFit fundraiser in Montreal aims to provide crucial support for survivors of conjugal violence. Organized by the non-profit organization Women Aware, the event seeks to connect victims with essential resources such as shelters and counseling services. The initiative is deeply personal for the organization’s president, Shennel Hunte, who herself escaped an abusive relationship in 2013.

Reflecting on her experience, Hunte shared, “The day that someone decides to leave is like the most violent day and the most challenging day.” She received support from family, Crime Victims Assistance Centres, and the courts, which enabled her to rebuild her life. Within a year, Hunte discovered the empowering effects of fitness, particularly through CrossFit, stating, “It made me feel strong.”

Now, she is leveraging her passion for fitness to help others in similar situations. Participants in the fundraiser contribute through donations in exchange for CrossFit classes, creating a community atmosphere focused on strength and resilience. Trainer Vincent Rojas emphasized the importance of raising awareness, stating, “If we can have a little circuit where we can bring people together, this is a proper opportunity for that.”

The need for such initiatives is underscored by alarming statistics from Montreal police (SPVM), which indicate a rising trend in conjugal violence. In 2024, domestic violence accounted for 26 percent of crimes against individuals. Additionally, data from Women and Gender Equality Canada reveals that nearly half of women aged 15 and older, who have been in an intimate relationship, have experienced some form of abuse.

Despite the pressing need for support, funding remains a significant challenge. Hunte noted that only $44 million has been allocated in federal funds to combat gender-based violence. She stated, “We have one main funder and they’ve been helping us through before COVID, during COVID, after, but they also haven’t received their envelopes, so it’s really hard.”

With this fundraiser, Hunte aims not only to raise financial support but also to foster greater awareness about the issues surrounding domestic violence. By promoting fitness as a source of strength and community, Women Aware hopes to empower survivors and ensure they have access to the resources they need to heal and move forward.
