The Cranbrook RCMP has officially launched a new program aimed at combatting bike theft in the community. In collaboration with Project 529, a well-established bike registration and theft-prevention initiative, this program is designed to provide cyclists with a reliable means of protecting their bicycles. The announcement comes in response to increasing concerns from residents regarding bike theft, which has been a recurring issue in the area.

How the Program Works

The program utilizes the 529 Garage app, enabling cyclists to register their bikes by recording essential details such as make, model, serial number, and photos. This app not only facilitates the registration process but also serves as a quick resource for identifying stolen bikes. Registered bicycles will receive a 529 Shield, a tamper-resistant decal that acts as a visible deterrent to thieves and links directly to the bike’s registration information.

In the event of a theft, cyclists can rapidly alert local police, bike shops, and the wider cycling community, significantly enhancing the likelihood of recovering stolen property. This approach not only benefits individual cyclists but also assists law enforcement in returning recovered bikes to their rightful owners, thereby reducing the number of unclaimed bicycles stored by police.

Community Engagement and Support

The Cranbrook RCMP Community Policing team has taken proactive measures to support this initiative by purchasing 529 Shields, which will be provided free of charge to local cyclists. Registration events are set to occur in the coming weeks, where community members are invited to bring their bikes for assistance with the registration process.

Cyclists can also visit the Cranbrook RCMP Detachment located at 31-11th Ave S from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00 for help with registering their bikes. “This is about working together,” stated S/Sgt. Barry Graham, the Detachment commander. “When police and the community join forces, we make it harder for thieves and safer for everyone. The launch of 529 Garage here is a big step forward in collaborating to protect what matters to people.”

The program has garnered support from the Province of British Columbia, which has collaborated with Project 529 to fund memberships for policing agencies throughout the province. This partnership underscores the commitment to creating safer communities for cyclists.

Project 529, launched in 2013, has emerged as the world’s largest community-powered bike recovery service, boasting millions of bikes registered globally. The platform has proven effective in deterring thefts and reuniting cyclists with their bicycles.

Cyclists are encouraged to download the free 529 Garage app, register their bikes, and participate in the upcoming registration events to receive their complimentary shield. Together, the community can take significant steps towards reducing bike theft and fostering a safer environment for all cyclists.
