Community Mourns the Loss of Velma Marion Cotten at 84

Velma Marion (Trott) Cotten, aged 84, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, at the Abbotsford Tabor Home. Born on April 15, 1941, in Port Alberni, BC, she lived a life marked by warmth, adventure, and a deep commitment to her family and community.

In 1959, Velma married Victor Eugene Cotten in Edmonton, Alberta. The couple created a strong family unit, raising two sons, Steve and Grant, who are now carrying forward her legacy. Velma is survived by her sons, Steve (Darlene Madsen) and Grant (May Cheung), as well as her cherished grandchildren: Aaron (Maraika Cristiu), Sara, Cameron (Aysha Prosser), Brandon, Spencer, and Jesse. Her family grew even more with the arrival of her beloved great-granddaughter, Nora.

Velma’s life was not only about family; she was also a dedicated community member. She was a lifelong member of TOPS, an organization focused on weight loss and health support. Additionally, she enjoyed square dancing and horseback riding, activities that brought her joy and connection with others.

During her life, Velma and Victor traveled to Germany twice while he served in the Canadian Armed Forces. Their commitment to hard work was evident in their business, Vic’s Shoe Repair & Engraving Shop, located in downtown Abbotsford, which became a local staple known for its quality service.

While Velma was predeceased by her husband Victor, her parents Charlotte and Edward, and her brother Peter, her spirit and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them. Her home was a sanctuary filled with love, and she welcomed all with open arms.

A celebration of Velma’s life is scheduled for Saturday, December 6, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Social Center, located at 3384 Gladwin Road. Friends and family are invited to drop in to honor her memory and share in the stories that defined her life.
