In a bold move to enhance its marketing strategy in college athletics, the University of Colorado Boulder has introduced a branded sideline bathroom specifically for head coach Deion Sanders. This initiative debuted during the Buffaloes’ opening game against Georgia Tech on September 1, 2023. Sponsored by Depend, the portable restroom facility is located conveniently next to the team bench, allowing Sanders easy access as he navigates his recovery from bladder cancer.

The decision to install the sideline bathroom reflects not only innovative marketing but also a responsive approach to the health needs of the coach. Sanders, who has openly discussed his condition, shared on social media earlier this month the importance of relying on Depend products. “I wasn’t joking! I truly DEPEND on Depend. Ain’t NO SHAME in taking care of yourself,” he wrote. Sanders emphasized the significance of health screenings and the use of protective products while remaining active in his role.

Health Challenges and Team Spirit

Sanders underwent treatment for bladder cancer over the summer, during which he took time away from coaching duties. In August 2023, his doctor confirmed that he had been cured, marking a significant milestone in his recovery. Additionally, it was revealed that a section of Sanders’ intestine was reconstructed to serve as a functional bladder. This innovative approach underscores the advances in medical treatment available today.

As the Buffaloes prepare for their matchup against Georgia Tech, this game is historically significant as it marks the first encounter between the two teams. Both teams share a connection, having split the national title following the 1990 season. Colorado will honor the late Bill McCartney, the head coach of that championship team, who passed away in January 2023 at the age of 84. The team will wear a commemorative patch on their uniforms in his memory.

Last season, the Buffaloes achieved a commendable record of 9-4. It will be the third season for Sanders at Colorado, although he will do so without his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, who have moved on to their own collegiate careers.

The introduction of the sideline bathroom not only showcases the evolving landscape of college sports marketing but also highlights the personal journey of a coach who has faced significant health challenges. As the Buffaloes take to the field, the presence of this unique facility serves as a reminder of the intersection of health, sports, and innovation in collegiate athletics.
