Colleen Jones, World Champion Curler, Passes Away at 65
Colleen Jones, a celebrated world champion curler and beloved sports personality, has passed away at the age of 65. Her son, Luke, announced her death on Tuesday morning via a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. Jones had been diagnosed with cancer earlier in 2023 and had been a prominent figure in the Canadian curling community for decades.
A Legacy of Achievement in Curling
A native of Halifax, Jones made history in 1982 when she won her first Canadian women’s curling championship at just 22 years old, becoming the youngest skip to achieve this feat. Her remarkable career continued with her second title at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 1999. Jones’s skill and leadership led her team, including Kim Kelly, Mary-Anne Arsenault, and Nancy Delahunt, to an impressive four consecutive titles from 2001 to 2004.
In recognition of her contributions to the sport, Jones was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2016, further solidifying her status as a curling legend. Additionally, in 2022, she was appointed a member of the Order of Canada, a prestigious honor acknowledging her contributions to Canadian sports and culture.
Impact Beyond the Rink
Jones also made significant contributions as a sports broadcaster, joining CBC in 1986. She became Halifax’s first female sports anchor, showcasing her vibrant personality and passion for sports. In 1989, she transitioned to CBC Newsworld, where she presented not only sports and weather but also engaging slice-of-life stories. After a successful career at the network, she filed her final report in 2023 before retiring.
Throughout her nearly four-decade tenure with CBC, Jones’s effervescent personality resonated with audiences, making her a cherished figure in Canadian broadcasting. Her legacy in curling and media has left an indelible mark, inspiring future generations of athletes and broadcasters alike.
Colleen Jones’s passing marks a significant loss for the sports community and her many fans across Canada. She will be remembered not only for her exceptional achievements on the ice but also for her warm spirit and dedication to the sport.
