Canadian Climber Avery MacDonald Sets Three Records in Finland

A talented young climber from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, has made headlines by setting three new Canadian speed records during the Youth World Sport Climbing Championships held in Helsinki, Finland. Competing in the women’s U17 category from July 23 to August 2, 2023, Avery MacDonald displayed remarkable skill and determination on her way to achieving this impressive feat.
Throughout the qualifying rounds, MacDonald ascended a challenging 15-metre wall multiple times, setting a new national record with each attempt. Her remarkable speed culminated in a knockout round entry with a time of 8.54 seconds. In the final run, she surpassed her previous record, clocking in at 8.47 seconds against China’s Jiaxin Tang, who ultimately secured the silver medal.
Climbing Competitions and Olympic Aspirations
Sport climbing consists of three distinct disciplines: lead, boulder, and speed. In a significant development for the sport, all three disciplines will be awarded medals at the upcoming 2028 Olympics. This inclusion highlights the growing popularity and recognition of climbing as a competitive sport on the global stage.
MacDonald’s achievements are particularly noteworthy as she is one of the few Canadian youth climbers to secure podium finishes in all three disciplines at the national level in successive years. Currently, she holds the title of national champion in both lead and boulder climbing. With her sights set on future competitions, MacDonald aims to secure a spot on Team Canada heading to Arco, Italy, in 2026 for the 35th IFSC U17 and U19 Youth World Championships.
As the sport continues to evolve, young athletes like MacDonald are paving the way for future generations of climbers. Her dedication and accomplishments serve as an inspiration, demonstrating the potential for Canadian athletes on the world stage. With the Olympic Games on the horizon, the climbing community will be watching closely as MacDonald and her peers strive for excellence in this dynamic and exciting sport.
