Hundreds of individuals in Calgary received warm Thanksgiving meals this weekend, thanks to the dedicated efforts of local non-profit organizations. The Drop-In Centre, led by president and CEO Sandra Clarkson, provided not only fish and chips on Sunday but also a full sit-down Thanksgiving dinner on Monday. This event was supported by the North Hills Lions Club and Costo, which generously donated 120 pumpkin pies for the occasion.

Clarkson emphasized the significance of these meals, stating, “Meals may seem like a really simple thing, but as we’re all gathering around our own tables, celebrating with family, it’s important to remember those that may be disconnected from their family right now.” She highlighted the importance of providing nourishing food to those in need, expressing gratitude towards the sponsors who made these meals possible.

On the same day, the Calgary Catholic Diocese was also busy with its Feed the Hungry program at St. Mary’s Cathedral on 18 Ave. S.W. Approximately 80 volunteers served around 500 Thanksgiving turkey dinners to attendees. Judy Rennenberg, area lead for the Feed the Hungry program, noted, “It’s a fully-cooked sit-down turkey dinner with all the trimmings and pumpkin pie.” She added that their efforts extend beyond Thanksgiving, as they provide meals every Sunday to those facing food insecurity.

Rennenberg welcomed community involvement, stating, “Everyone needs to feel like they belong somewhere and have a sense of community. We strive to make people feel welcome, not just for the food, but for the comfort and connection volunteers provide.”

The collective efforts of these organizations highlight the spirit of community support during the holiday season. With the ongoing challenges many are facing, initiatives like these play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging and care for those who may be struggling.
