Bruce County Council Unveils First Nation Artwork Honoring Land

A new artwork symbolizing Bruce County’s commitment to Indigenous recognition was unveiled during a council meeting on September 18, 2023. The piece, titled Aki Ogichidaa, translates to “Protectors of the Land” and was created by First Nation artist Kennedy Cameron-Nashkewa. This unveiling serves as a formal acknowledgment of the county’s Land Acknowledgement initiative.
In her statement, Cameron-Nashkewa expressed the significance of the artwork, stating, “This painting is my way of giving thanks to the land that holds us, to the ancestors who guide us, and to the generations yet to come. May this piece invite reflection, respect, and a renewed sense of responsibility. For we are all part of the circle.”
The commissioning of this artwork is a continuation of Bruce County’s Indigenous Reconciliation Planning Initiative, which began in January 2022. This initiative has been developed with the guidance of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation and aims to honor the deep connection that the Anishinaabe people share with the land. The artwork will be displayed in the council chambers located in Walkerton.
On July 5, 2025, both the Bruce County and Saugeen Ojibway Nation Councils reached a consensus in accepting the Land Acknowledgement and Protocol. This collaborative effort signifies a commitment to fostering respect and understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
The unveiling of Aki Ogichidaa marks a significant milestone in Bruce County’s journey towards reconciliation and recognition of Indigenous heritage. As the artwork hangs in the council chambers, it serves as a reminder of the responsibilities shared by all to protect and honor the land and its history.
