Batavia Celebrates New Food Pantry, Mural Unveiling, and Community Events

The Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry and Clothes Closet is set to open its new permanent location at 916 First St. on October 1, 2023. This move comes as a significant upgrade for the organization, which has served Batavia families since 1981. The new 14,000-square-foot facility was made possible by a $3 million Community Project Funding Grant secured with the assistance of Congresswoman Lauren Underwood. The upgraded facility includes expanded storage, improved refrigeration capacity, and new loading docks, although operating hours will remain unchanged.
Previously located in a City-owned building on Flinn Street, the Food Pantry temporarily relocated to Raddant Road earlier this year. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house are planned for later this fall, marking a new chapter for the organization.
Community Engagement and Festivities
In addition to the Food Pantry’s relocation, the Batavia Fire Department is hosting an Open House on September 28, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Station 2, located at 1400 W. Main St.. Attendees can expect live demonstrations, station tours, CPR lessons, and a variety of family-friendly activities, including a kids’ obstacle course and an appearance by Sparky the Fire Dog. The event will also feature free food and giveaways. Parking is available at the Batavia High School south lot.
Another highlight is the City of Good Energy Mural Ribbon-Cutting and Dedication Celebration, scheduled for October 4, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event will take place in the parking lot behind the Comedy Vault on South River Street, between Webster and Wilson Streets. Guests are invited to enjoy refreshments, participate in a drop-in craft activity, and meet mural artist Amy Decker. The mural, part of the Water Street Studios Public Art Initiative, celebrates Batavia’s identity and community spirit with a modern interpretation of its historic tagline.
Arts and Entertainment in Batavia
Music lovers can experience a tribute to the legendary Neil Diamond this Sunday, September 28, 2023, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Founders Room at the Batavia Public Library, located at 10 S. Batavia Ave.. Performer Denny “Diamond” Svehla will deliver an engaging performance, sharing stories behind Diamond’s timeless hits. Attendees can register for the event at batavia.libnet.info/event/12888232.
Additionally, the Batavia Community Band will present a concert at the Peg Bond Center on the Batavia Riverwalk on October 5, 2023, from 3 to 4 p.m.. This free event welcomes attendees of all ages to enjoy a selection of marches, Broadway tunes, and patriotic favorites. Donations to support new music are encouraged, with the concert directed by John Heath. For further details, visit bataviail.gov.
These events reflect Batavia’s commitment to community engagement and highlight the city’s vibrant culture and spirit.
