Victoria Instructor Transforms Fitness Experience for Aging Community
A fitness instructor in Victoria, Canada, is reshaping perceptions of fitness and aging through her innovative approach to group classes. Justina Bailey, who has been teaching for over 35 years, aims to dispel myths surrounding physical activity for older adults, providing a supportive environment that encourages movement and engagement.
Bailey teaches both in-person and online classes, catering to a diverse group of students. Her ability to connect with participants has garnered significant praise. Peggy Howard, one of her students, noted, “Every instructor teaches you how to do something, but not why.” Another student, Libby Rush, emphasized Bailey’s attentive nature, stating, “She sees you, and she really sees you,” highlighting the personal attention Bailey gives during workouts.
Reflecting on her journey into fitness instruction, Bailey shared an early encounter at the YMCA. “When I was probably 16 or 17 years old, the male instructor said, ‘Why don’t you be a fitness instructor because you look like you’re having a good time,’” she recalled. This pivotal moment led her to pursue extensive training worldwide across various fitness specializations.
Holistic Approach to Wellness
Bailey’s teaching philosophy integrates insights from multiple health professionals, including orthodontists and osteopaths. “I’ll visit them and ask what’s working in their fields so that we can put it together, because this is an organism we’re talking about,” she explained. Her classes are designed with a deep understanding of individual capabilities, making fitness accessible for everyone.
Students appreciate Bailey’s respect for their limitations. Howard remarked, “She takes the time to look at how you’re doing an exercise, correct you where necessary, and applaud you when you succeed.” Rush, who lives with a chronic disease, expressed how Bailey’s classes provide an escape, saying, “When I come to Justina, I don’t have it. I’m transported.”
The sense of community in Bailey’s classes has led to impressive growth. A class in Oak Bay that started with just six students has expanded to 35, maintaining full attendance since its inception. This transformation reflects the impact Bailey has on her students, with many describing her as an inspiration. “She gives me… hope,” Rush noted.
Acknowledgment and Influence
Bailey’s dedication has not gone unnoticed; she was recently recognized as one of Canada’s top fitness instructors by Impact magazine. Her students consistently describe her as inspiring, understanding, and patient. Sheridan Cooper praised her knowledge and commitment to ongoing learning, stating, “It’s almost easier to accept aging, because she’s teaching us how to adapt.”
Bailey herself acknowledges the mutual support present in her classes. “We’re a good team,” she said. “I think I support them as much as they support me back.” This sense of shared purpose underscores the positive atmosphere she cultivates, making her classes a vital resource for those seeking to stay active and engaged as they age.
Through her innovative approach, Justina Bailey not only teaches fitness but fosters a love of movement that resonates deeply with her community. Her commitment to accessibility and understanding in fitness instruction serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for many.
