Saskatchewan Radiothon Raises Over $1.1 Million for Children’s Hearing Health
The annual Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Radiothon successfully concluded on Thursday, raising an impressive total of $1,119,195 to enhance the hearing health of children across Saskatchewan. This two-day event, presented by CIBC Wood Gundy, has transformed from a modest fundraiser into a significant province-wide initiative over the past 23 years.
Radio stations throughout Saskatchewan participated in the event, broadcasting heartfelt stories shared by patients, families, and medical staff at the children’s hospital. These narratives provided a glimpse into the daily realities faced by young patients and the critical care they receive.
A range of organizations contributed generously, including the Saskatchewan Elks and the Royal Purple Fund for Children, which made a combined donation of $50,000. Capital Automotive Group announced a further $25,000 gift during the radiothon, while the Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation contributed $10,000. Additionally, all funds raised will be matched by the David and Karen Holst Family Foundation, up to $200,000.
Enhancing Pediatric Hearing Care in Saskatchewan
The funds raised during the radiothon will specifically support the fields of Otology and Otolaryngology. The Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation aims to replace outdated sound booths with two new, child-friendly booths, which are expected to increase the capacity for pediatric hearing assessments by 60 percent. This upgrade is anticipated to significantly reduce waitlists and ensure timely care for children in need.
Currently, the hospital stands as the province’s largest screening site for hearing health, testing between 450 and 500 babies each month, or approximately 15 to 20 daily. The funds will also bolster the Cochlear Implant Program, the only one of its kind in Saskatchewan, providing essential surgical and audiological services to over 100 children each year.
Since its inception, the radiothon has raised over $17.42 million for children’s health initiatives, demonstrating the ongoing commitment of the community to support young patients and their families.
The Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Radiothon not only highlights the importance of pediatric health care but also showcases the collective efforts of businesses and individuals in Saskatchewan to improve the lives of children facing hearing challenges.
