Richmond Paramedic Brightens Days with Therapy Dog Dug
A Richmond paramedic, known as Fonzie, has taken his commitment to community service a step further by volunteering his time with his therapy dog, Dug. On his days off, Fonzie and Dug make regular rounds at Richmond Hospital and Vancouver International Airport (YVR), bringing joy and comfort to those in need.
The duo’s initiative is part of a broader Therapy Dog Program that aims to alleviate stress and anxiety among patients and airport visitors. Fonzie, a dedicated member of the local Emergency Medical Services (EMS), believes that the presence of a friendly dog can significantly improve the emotional well-being of individuals facing challenging situations.
Impact on Patients and Travelers
At Richmond Hospital, Fonzie and Dug visit various wards, including pediatrics and oncology, where they engage with patients and their families. Many have expressed appreciation for the emotional support provided by the therapy dog. “Dug has the unique ability to bring a smile to anyone’s face, even in the most difficult circumstances,” Fonzie stated.
The positive effects of therapy dogs are well-documented. Research shows that interactions with animals can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and enhance overall mood. This evidence underlines the importance of initiatives like Fonzie’s, which tap into the therapeutic benefits of animal companionship.
At YVR, the presence of therapy dogs has become increasingly popular. Travelers often find themselves stressed, whether due to delays or the pressures of travel. Fonzie noted that Dug’s visits help to create a more relaxed atmosphere at the airport. “People stop to pet him, and you can see their worries fade away,” he added.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
Fonzie’s work with Dug has sparked interest in expanding the therapy dog program within the Richmond community. Local healthcare providers and airport officials have expressed support for the initiative, recognizing the potential benefits for mental health and community spirit.
Future plans include training additional therapy dogs and volunteers to join the program, allowing for more frequent visits and broader outreach. Fonzie hopes to foster a network of therapy teams that can serve various community locations, extending the program’s reach.
The bond between Fonzie and Dug exemplifies the profound impact that therapy animals can have on people’s lives. Through their dedication, they not only provide comfort to those in need but also inspire others to engage in community service. As Fonzie continues to volunteer his time, he remains committed to improving the lives of individuals in Richmond and beyond.
