Carla MacLeod, head coach of the Ottawa Charge, has announced that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite this personal challenge, she intends to remain with the team during her treatment. MacLeod shared her diagnosis in a news release on Sunday, acknowledging the difficulty of hearing those words but expressing confidence in her medical care.

In her statement, MacLeod remarked, “Hearing those words was incredibly difficult, but I want everyone to know that I’m going to be okay.” She emphasized her gratitude for her medical team, stating, “I’m incredibly fortunate to have an exceptional medical team guiding me, and together we’ve built a treatment plan that gives me tremendous confidence in the road ahead.”

MacLeod plans to continue coaching the Charge and will also fulfill her role with the Czechia Women’s National Team at the upcoming Milano Cortina Winter Olympics in February. “There are still some variables to be determined as we move forward, but my goal—without question—is to be behind the bench as often as possible,” she noted. Her passion for coaching remains strong, as she expressed that working with both teams is a privilege she cherishes deeply.

As she begins treatment this week, MacLeod will miss the Charge’s next game against the Minnesota Frost on December 2, 2023. “The FOMO will be real, but I’m incredibly lucky to be surrounded by world-class players, coaches, and staff who will keep pushing our group forward,” she added. MacLeod is committed to staying connected with her team during this time.

In her absence, assistant coach Haley Irwin will take over as head coach for the upcoming match. Mike Hirshfeld, general manager of the Charge, expressed the organization’s support for MacLeod. “The Charge and League are here to support Carla throughout her treatment,” he stated. Hirshfeld commended MacLeod’s strength, resilience, and optimism, affirming, “We know she’ll approach this next chapter with the same determination she brings to everything she does.”

The Ottawa Charge community stands united in support of their coach, recognizing both her dedication to the team and her personal journey ahead. As MacLeod navigates this challenge, her leadership and commitment continue to inspire those around her.
