New Drug Alert: Penticton Faces Risks from ‘Crack Caviar’

Penticton is experiencing a significant public health alert following the emergence of a dangerous new substance known as “crack caviar.” Unlike traditional crack cocaine, this drug contains no cocaine or stimulants. Instead, samples have tested positive for fentanyl, a potent opioid that poses a severe risk of overdose and potential fatalities.
This warning comes from Interior Health and coincides with a broader advisory for the entire region. The organization reported a concerning increase in overdose incidents starting around August 27, 2023. The specific alert for Penticton was issued on September 5, 2023, highlighting the critical nature of the situation. The drugs sold as “crack” are misleadingly marketed, which can lead users to underestimate the risks, especially given that many may lack experience with opioids.
According to Interior Health, the presence of fentanyl in these drugs has been linked to multiple recent poisonings in the Penticton area. The risk is compounded by the fact that users may not have a tolerance for opioids, increasing the likelihood of overdose. The health authority emphasized the need for immediate caution among residents.
In light of this escalating crisis, Interior Health has provided several recommendations to mitigate the risk of overdose:
– Users are advised to get their drugs tested before consumption. Testing services are available through Substance Use Services at 310-MHSU, as well as Penticton Drug Checking at 236-422-1601 and various locations listed at www.drugchecking.ca.
– The health authority recommends against mixing different substances or using drugs and alcohol simultaneously.
– It is crucial not to use drugs alone. If necessary, users should ask someone to check on them.
– Starting with a small dosage is advised to gauge individual tolerance.
– Utilizing an overdose prevention site is another recommended safety measure.
– For those who may need to use drugs while alone, the Lifeguard app can connect users with emergency responders in the event of an overdose.
Testing services in Penticton are available through ASK Wellness from Monday to Friday, providing a crucial resource for individuals in the community. Additionally, Interior Health is promoting its Virtual Addiction Medicine clinic, which offers a variety of programs accessible via telephone from anywhere in the region. Interested individuals can visit interiorhealth.ca to request an appointment.
The rise of “crack caviar” underscores the urgent need for community awareness and support systems to address the ongoing opioid crisis. As Penticton navigates this troubling situation, cooperation and vigilance from residents and health authorities alike will be essential in reducing the risks associated with these dangerous substances.
