Mary Simon, Canada’s Governor General, has been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for a respiratory illness. The announcement was made by Rideau Hall in a statement released on Friday, confirming that Simon will continue her recovery at home. She missed the Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa earlier this week due to her health condition.

According to the statement, Simon, who is 78 years old, is looking forward to resuming her full duties “in due course.” She expressed gratitude towards the hospital staff for their care and thanked Canadians for their supportive messages and well wishes during her hospitalization.

Details of Hospitalization and Recovery

On Monday, Rideau Hall reported that Simon was in the hospital due to a respiratory virus but was “doing well.” The specific type of virus was not disclosed, nor was the duration of her hospital stay. Chief Justice Richard Wagner, who also serves as the deputy governor general, filled in for Simon at the National War Memorial during the Remembrance Day ceremony held on November 11.

The statement issued on Friday acknowledged Wagner’s support in taking on responsibilities during Simon’s absence. It noted that he will also represent the Governor General at an upcoming state visit with King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden scheduled for next week.

Assuming office in 2021, Simon made history as the first Indigenous person to hold the position of Governor General in Canada. Her role involves acting as the representative of the monarch in the country, and she has been an advocate for Indigenous rights and reconciliation throughout her tenure.

As Simon continues her recovery, the nation remains optimistic about her return to public duties. The support she has received highlights the community’s regard for her leadership and commitment to serving Canada.
