Calgary Petting Farm Shut Down Following Avian Influenza Cases
Alberta Health Services (AHS) has enforced a closure order for the popular petting farm, Butterfield Acres, located in Calgary, due to the detection of Avian Influenza. On October 16, AHS reported that health officials were informed of nine cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) at the facility. This prompted the farm to voluntarily close from October 13 to 17. Following the confirmation of the virus, AHS issued a formal closure order on October 17.
Butterfield Acres will remain closed until it meets the conditions outlined in the closure order and medical officers deem it safe to reopen. AHS emphasized that while HPAI predominantly affects birds, there have been rare instances of human infections resulting from close contact with infected animals. The organization reassured the public that the risk of transmission remains low.
Individuals who visited Butterfield Acres between October 6 and 12 are encouraged to contact health services at 811 if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat. AHS noted that those visitors who do not exhibit symptoms do not need to reach out to health services.
Understanding Avian Influenza Symptoms
The symptoms of avian influenza can vary widely, ranging from mild to severe, depending on the specific strain of the virus. According to AHS, the most commonly reported symptoms include:
– Fever
– Cough
– Sore throat
– Muscle aches
It is crucial for the public to remain vigilant, particularly those who may have had recent exposure to the affected farm. While the situation is being monitored closely, AHS continues to provide guidance on how to stay safe during this time.
In conclusion, the temporary closure of Butterfield Acres serves as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of Avian Influenza. AHS will continue to assess the situation and provide updates as necessary, ensuring the health and safety of the community remains a top priority.
