The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba has launched its campaign titled “Your Path Forward” to support individuals and families affected by dementia. This initiative aims to provide resources, reduce stigma, and foster community engagement for the more than 20,300 Manitobans currently living with dementia. According to Erin Crawford, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, the campaign is vital for families who may feel isolated during this challenging time.

“Being diagnosed with dementia can be scary and often leaves families feeling alone in dealing with it,” Crawford states. “It’s so important that families know they are not alone. There are thousands of Manitobans experiencing the challenges dementia brings, and we are here to help them access the right resources and guidance to move forward.”

Raising Awareness and Building Community

The “Your Path Forward” campaign coincides with World Alzheimer’s Month, an annual initiative aimed at raising awareness about dementia and its impact on families. The Alzheimer Society emphasizes that support is available for those concerned about symptoms, newly diagnosed individuals, or those facing ongoing challenges.

The Society connects families with others who understand their experiences. Gary Garbutt reached out to the Alzheimer Society for support and joined a local support group. “I decided to reach out with various questions and concerns. Eventually, I joined a support group and discovered that was exactly what I really needed — that sense of community and understanding,” he shared.

Crawford highlights the importance of open dialogue to combat stigma surrounding dementia. She notes that sharing personal experiences can foster understanding and acceptance within the community. “I’m not afraid to tell people I have dementia; that took a long time. My wife Barb and I didn’t want anyone to know at first, but once we were open about it, everything became easier. It’s so important to be honest so that others can understand too,” Garbutt adds.

Community Engagement Initiatives

The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba is dedicated to creating dementia-friendly environments through community partnerships. Collaborations with organizations such as FortWhyte Alive, Assiniboine Park Zoo, The Leaf, and Dalnavert Museum aim to provide supportive spaces for individuals living with dementia and their families.

Crawford emphasizes that a diagnosis of dementia does not mean an end to community involvement. “Just because you have a dementia diagnosis doesn’t mean things have to stop. You can continue to engage in your community, meet new people, and learn new things,” she asserts.

With the “Your Path Forward” campaign, the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba seeks to empower families, reduce stigma, and create supportive networks that enable individuals to live fulfilling lives despite the challenges of dementia. The campaign serves as a reminder that community support is essential in navigating this journey together.
