United Way Expands After-School Program to Okanagan Communities
United Way British Columbia has announced the expansion of its School’s Out program to communities in the Okanagan region. As families prepare for the upcoming school year, the initiative aims to provide crucial support for children and parents alike, especially in areas facing significant child poverty rates.
In communities such as **Enderby** and **Oliver/Osoyoos**, where child poverty rates are reported at nearly **17 per cent** and **19 per cent**, respectively, working parents often struggle with after-school care and food security. The School’s Out program is designed to alleviate some of these concerns by offering children aged six to twelve a safe environment that promotes mental and physical wellness, social development, and academic enrichment.
Trisha Dulku, strategic initiatives manager at United Way BC, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “The School’s Out program offers kids a safe space, caring adults, and opportunities to grow. For many, it also means a healthy meal they might not otherwise get.” The program also aims to address the rising costs of living that have left many families in precarious situations.
The new program sites will be facilitated by the **Splatsin Tsm7aksaltn Society** near Enderby and the **Desert Sun Counselling and Resource Centre Society** in Oliver, in collaboration with the **Okanagan Similkameen School District**. These partnerships are vital for providing local children with the necessary support during the critical after-school hours.
Addressing Food Security and Stability
With many families experiencing financial stress, the School’s Out program acts as a vital resource for stability. It not only offers educational support but also ensures that children receive nutritious snacks during after-school hours, thereby addressing food insecurity that has become increasingly prevalent in the region.
“More children are hungry due to rising costs and limited resources,” Dulku added. “This program ensures they leave nourished, supported, and ready to thrive.”
The expansion of the School’s Out program is not limited to Enderby and Oliver. This fall, the initiative will also launch in **Kelowna** through a partnership with the **OCCA Communities Association**, further meeting the demand for safe and inclusive spaces during the critical after-school hours of **3 to 6 p.m.**
Building on the success of existing programs in **Peachland** and **Trail**, United Way BC’s School’s Out continues to grow. The initiative aims to provide essential support to children in both urban and rural areas, ensuring they have the resources needed to build confidence and develop crucial social skills.
As the start of the school year approaches, the School’s Out program stands as a significant step toward supporting families in the Okanagan. By addressing both educational needs and food security, United Way BC is making a meaningful impact in the lives of children and their families during a critical time.
