UCP Cancels January Exams, Offers Alternatives for Students
The United Conservative Party (UCP) has announced the cancellation of January 2026 provincial exams, allowing students the option to take these assessments in April or June of the same year. This decision comes in the wake of a recent three-week teachers’ strike that impacted instructional time across Alberta.
In an official statement, the provincial government emphasized that the cancellation aims to help both students and teachers focus on learning after the disruption caused by the strike. The UCP noted, “To ensure students and teachers can concentrate on learning after lost instructional time due to the teacher strike, Alberta’s government has cancelled the January 2026 diploma examinations and Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs).”
Students who choose not to participate in the later exams will receive their school-awarded marks as their final official course results. A note will be added to their transcripts indicating that no diploma exam was written, ensuring that this decision will not hinder their ability to graduate or gain admission to post-secondary institutions.
Support for Students and Schools
The UCP’s approach guarantees that all school authorities across the province will adhere to learning outcomes for the academic year. Additionally, schools will have the flexibility to adjust their calendars as necessary to accommodate these changes. The government stated that any modifications to the school calendar will be communicated to families through their respective schools.
This cancellation affects all school authorities in Alberta, automatically exempting students from the January diploma exams and PATs. The government’s proactive measures aim to minimize the impact of the teachers’ strike while maintaining academic integrity and support for students as they navigate their educational journeys.
By providing alternative exam dates, the UCP seeks to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed academically, despite the interruptions faced earlier in the school year. This initiative reflects a commitment to prioritizing students’ educational needs and facilitating their transition into further education and career opportunities.
