Sudbury Students Discover Mining Careers Through Engaging Game
More than 350 high school students from Greater Sudbury engaged in a unique educational experience on March 15, 2023, during the Mine Opportunity Challenge. This event, held at Laurentian University, is part of the annual Sudbury Mining Week, aimed at introducing students to various career opportunities within the mining sector.
The challenge combines elements of popular games like Monopoly and the Amazing Race. Participating teams navigate through booths set up by 24 exhibiting companies and educational departments, where they answer questions and complete challenges related to mining, technology, engineering, geoscience, environmental issues, and skilled trades.
Nicole Tardif, chair of Sudbury Mining Week and program coordinator at the Goodman School of Mines, emphasized the educational value of the challenge. “Students learn about the career paths available to them, as well as modern mining technologies and environmental regulations,” Tardif explained. “Mining is an exciting industry where well-paying jobs and diverse career opportunities await.”
Tardif developed the game two decades ago to make geology learning more engaging for her university students. Over the years, it has evolved significantly, with numerous iterations enhancing its educational impact. “Many students come in knowing little about mining and the local companies,” she noted. “This experience opens their eyes to a variety of career possibilities.”
The event not only fosters awareness of the mining industry but also showcases the community’s commitment to education and innovation. Following its success in Sudbury, the game has been played in Timmins and Thunder Bay, with plans for implementation in North Bay later this week.
Looking to the future, Tardif expressed her enthusiasm for expanding the game’s reach. Plans are underway to digitize the game, incorporating interactive animation through a collaboration with students from Cambrian College. “My goal is to eventually have the game played across Canada in a virtual format, allowing students nationwide to learn about mining and its various facets,” Tardif stated.
As the mining industry continues to evolve, initiatives like the Mine Opportunity Challenge are crucial in attracting the next generation of workers. By making learning interactive and enjoyable, Sudbury is not only fostering interest in mining careers but also contributing to a more informed and skilled workforce.
