Students Embrace New Beginnings on Windsor’s Move-In Day

On September 3, 2023, students from around the globe gathered at the University of Windsor and St. Clair College for move-in day, marking the start of their academic journeys. Over one thousand students began settling into their new residences, supported by a dedicated team of volunteers. Zoe Rivera, a residence life team leader at the University of Windsor, noted the palpable excitement among the incoming students.
“There’s a lot of excited energy happening. Students are looking forward to the school year and are eager to move into their own space and make it their own,” Rivera said. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as students packed their belongings into bins before heading into the dormitories.
First-Time Experiences and Emotional Goodbyes
Among the new residents was Samiha Mozammel, who recently completed her undergraduate degree at Trent University in Oshawa. Now, she is preparing to pursue a teaching career at Windsor. Standing outside Alumni Hall, she expressed her mixed feelings about this significant transition.
“I’m a little bit nervous. It’s my first time moving away from home, but I’m very, very excited,” Mozammel said. Her passion for teaching stems from the impactful experiences she had with her elementary school teachers. “A lot of the life lessons I learned as a kid were during my time in elementary school, which is why I want to be a teacher,” she added.
The move-in day was not only an important milestone for the students but also a poignant moment for their families. When discussing his daughter’s decision to attend Windsor, Mozammel’s father became emotional. “When she first said, ‘I’ve been accepted at Windsor,’ I said, ‘No, I don’t want that,’” he shared with a laugh, reflecting the bittersweet nature of the day.
New Facilities Enhance Student Experience
This year’s move-in day also marked a significant development for the University of Windsor with the opening of Rodzik Hall, a new residence featuring six floors, lounges, and a dining hall. Rivera highlighted that approximately 420 students will call this new building home. “We’re super excited. All of the students are the first ones to live in that space,” she stated.
With classes set to begin on September 4, 2023, the new residents are eager to embark on their academic endeavors and embrace the vibrant campus community. The combination of excitement, new experiences, and supportive environments positions these students for a successful year ahead at Windsor.
