A significant snowstorm has led to widespread school closures across the Greater Toronto Area on Thursday, January 15, 2026. All major school boards, including the Toronto District School Board, Peel District School Board, and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, announced cancellations due to severe weather conditions.

Residents woke up to a substantial accumulation of snow as a low pressure system moved through the region late on Wednesday. Environment Canada had previously issued a snowfall warning, predicting between 20 to 30 centimetres of snow to fall in the Toronto area from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon. Snowfall was expected to taper off later in the day, but the weather agency cautioned about reduced visibility during heavy snow and local blowing snow conditions.

Weather Conditions and Impact

In its morning alert, Environment Canada highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by the snowstorm. “A low pressure system will continue to bring significant snowfall to much of southern Ontario. Very cold wind chills by this morning will add to the adverse weather conditions,” the report stated.

Temperatures plummeted overnight, with the mercury reaching -22°C with the wind chill on Thursday morning. These frigid conditions exacerbated the impact of the snowstorm, prompting officials to prioritize safety by closing schools. Additional school boards, including the York District School Board, Halton District School Board, and District School Board of Niagara, also announced cancellations, ensuring that students remained safe during these hazardous conditions.

The snowstorm serves as a reminder of the winter challenges faced by southern Ontario. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and to exercise caution while navigating the roads, as local authorities continue to address the impact of the snowfall on transportation and public safety.
