Sault College Achieves First Accreditation for Nursing Programs
Sault College in Ontario has officially received accreditation from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) for its independent Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) and Bridge programs. This significant milestone confirms that the college meets rigorous national standards for nursing education excellence. Previously, Sault College’s nursing programs were accredited through a partnership with Laurentian University. Now, as a fully independent provider, the college is poised to advance its commitment to training future nursing professionals.
The CASN accreditation is recognized nationwide as a benchmark of program quality, indicating that Sault College’s nursing curriculum, faculty qualifications, and student support services exceed established national standards. The accreditation process involved a thorough program self-evaluation, stakeholder engagement, and in-depth consultations with both students and faculty. This accomplishment underscores the college’s focus on continuous improvement and academic leadership within the nursing field.
Program Highlights and Future Implications
The newly accredited standalone Honours BScN program is designed to offer students early and consistent clinical placements, small class sizes, and access to advanced simulation labs. These features aim to prepare students effectively for real-world nursing challenges. Additionally, the RPN-to-BScN Bridge program allows registered practical nurses to complete a one-semester bridge and enter Year Three of the four-year BScN, enhancing career advancement opportunities for working professionals.
Both pathways ensure that graduates meet the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) entry-to-practice competencies, making them eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX). The first standalone BScN class is expected to graduate in June 2026. Although past NCLEX results reflected those of the collaborative program, initiatives have been implemented to enhance student success, with an expectation of stronger performance in the years to come.
Sault College’s newly accredited programs are also eligible for the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant, which provides substantial financial support to students who commit to practicing in Ontario post-graduation.
Commitment to Health Care Education
Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including simulation labs featuring life-like mannequins, Sault College offers a supportive, hands-on learning environment guided by experienced nurse educators.
“This accreditation reaffirms Sault College’s commitment to fostering the next generation of expert, compassionate health-care professionals,” stated Rebecca Keown, Dean of Health. “By prioritizing student experience, individualized instruction, and robust career support, the college creates pathways for students of all backgrounds to succeed in nursing.”
Keown also expressed gratitude to the faculty, staff, students, and community partners for their contributions in achieving this national recognition. Sault College remains dedicated to providing a steady pipeline of skilled health care workers for the local community and the province of Ontario, ensuring that its education and training meet the highest national standards.
