Saskatchewan Schools Renew Free Menstrual Product Program
A renewed initiative in Saskatchewan will continue to provide free menstrual products in schools across the province. The program, which has been in operation for the past two and a half years, is a collaboration between Shoppers Drug Mart and the provincial government. Under this program, menstrual products are donated by Shoppers Drug Mart and distributed to more than 670 schools, ensuring that students have access to essential items.
The government emphasizes that this initiative is designed to alleviate stress and embarrassment for women and girls. Accessible menstrual products have been shown to positively impact student attendance and overall well-being. In a notable commitment to the program, Shoppers Drug Mart announced it will donate 12 million menstrual products over the next three years, further cementing its role in supporting women’s health.
Commitment to Women’s Health
David Marwell, interim president of Shoppers Drug Mart, highlighted the company’s ongoing dedication to addressing women’s health issues. “Shoppers has been focused on women’s health issues for the last 11 years, and this is clearly one that impacts all women; it’s something that we’re very proud to support and be a part of,” he stated.
The program not only affects Saskatchewan but also extends to other provinces, including Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland, where similar efforts are underway. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that students across Canada have access to necessary health products.
Awareness and Accessibility
To facilitate access, all school washrooms feature stickers on mirrors, directing students on where to find menstrual products within their school buildings. This initiative reflects a broader understanding of the importance of menstrual health in educational settings and addresses a need that has often been overlooked.
Through this program, Saskatchewan schools are setting a precedent for inclusivity and support for students, fostering an environment where health and education go hand in hand. As this initiative continues, it underscores the importance of community involvement in addressing essential health needs for young people.
