Saskatchewan Polytechnic Launches New Campus Construction Plans

The construction of a new campus for Saskatchewan Polytechnic is underway at Innovation Place, with significant developments expected in the coming months. Currently in the early stages of development, the request-for-proposal process is slated to close in November. This initiative marks a major investment in the region’s educational infrastructure, aimed at enhancing facilities and expanding program offerings.
The first structure to be built as part of the new Joseph A. Remai Saskatoon Campus will be the Skilled Trades and Technology building. This phase is currently in the procurement stage, with the successful contractor set to be selected in December. Construction is projected to begin in early 2026, although the timeline for completion remains to be finalized.
Groundbreaking for the project commenced in August 2024, with initial site preparation taking place in September. The provincial government has committed $200 million to this ambitious project, as announced by Premier Scott Moe. He emphasized that the development aims to create an “innovation corridor” that leverages the resources of Saskatchewan Polytechnic, the University of Saskatchewan, and Innovation Place.
While the announcement of this capital project occurred in 2023, discussions regarding the campus location have been ongoing since 2015. The renewal project was first highlighted in 2014, when Saskatchewan Polytechnic allocated $500,000 for initial design and development plans.
In January 2025, the provincial government further invested $16 million into the project, with an additional $6 million designated in the 2024-25 provincial budget for design and pre-procurement activities. The existing Saskatoon campus, located on Idylwyld Drive, has faced challenges due to its age, having originally been established as a vocational school in the 1940s.
Larry Rosia, president and CEO of Saskatchewan Polytechnic, stated that this new campus will significantly expand the institution’s capacity and enhance its ability to produce skilled graduates. “This will help grow the economy and increase our competitiveness in attracting investment to Saskatchewan and Canada,” he remarked in 2023. The new facility aims to replace the current network of 11 decentralized and aging buildings, thereby creating a modern environment for learning and research.
Although no specific completion dates have been announced for the Skilled Trades and Technology building, Innovation Saskatchewan has indicated a target opening date of fall 2029. This timeline includes anticipated renovations to the concourse at 116 Research Drive and the 121 Research Drive building, which are expected to be completed by the same year.
The transition to the new campus is projected to occur gradually, allowing for a seamless integration of facilities and programs. As the project progresses, it represents a significant step forward in advancing educational opportunities in Saskatchewan, providing a robust framework for future generations of students.
