Private Schools in B.C. Save Taxpayers Hundreds of Millions

Concerns regarding the financial impact of private schools on taxpayers in British Columbia have sparked debate. In a recent letter to the editor, resident Paul Griffin of White Rock highlighted the significant savings private schools provide to the public system, arguing that these institutions do not place a burden on taxpayers.
According to Griffin, private schools contribute positively to the economy by saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually. This assertion is based on the fact that private schools receive significantly less funding per student compared to public schools. While public schools rely on substantial government funding, private institutions operate with a fraction of that amount.
In addition to lower funding, private schools are responsible for the full costs associated with land acquisition and school construction. Griffin emphasized that parents who choose private education continue to pay standard taxes through the annual property tax assessment, just like all other residents. This dual financial contribution significantly reduces the overall costs to the public education system.
The argument for the efficiency of private schools is further supported by the findings of the Fraser Institute. The institute conducts annual assessments of academic outcomes, consistently showing that students in private schools achieve better results compared to their public counterparts. These academic advantages suggest that private schools provide value not only to the families that choose them but also to the broader community.
As discussions around education funding continue, Griffin’s letter draws attention to the importance of recognizing the role private schools play in the educational landscape of British Columbia. By alleviating some of the financial burden on the public system, private schools serve as an essential component of the province’s educational framework.
The ongoing dialogue about the relationship between private and public education will likely continue, but proponents of private schooling argue that the financial benefits are clear and worthy of consideration in policy discussions.
