Nova Scotia’s Mo Gato Brings Unique Mauritian Flavors to Local Market
In a remarkable effort to introduce the diverse culinary heritage of Mauritius to Nova Scotia, Tanya Suefna launched her business, Mo Gato Mauritian Delicacies, in 2022. This initiative is part of the Specialized Program in Cooking Entrepreneurship (SPICE) facilitated by the Centre for Women in Business, aimed at supporting female entrepreneurs in the region.
Upon relocating to Canada, Suefna found herself as one of the few Mauritians in the area. Recognizing a gap in the local market for Mauritian cuisine, she sought to share the flavours of her homeland. “There’s a little taste missing here and I would love to share,” she expressed, highlighting her desire to create a sense of belonging in her new community.
From Cookies to Catering: A Culinary Journey
Initially, Suefna began her venture by selling a single type of strawberry-guava-flavoured cookie at the Alderney Landing market. “From there it’s been a very wonderful adventure,” she noted, reflecting on the growth of her business, which now boasts over 20 unique flavours.
Mo Gato stands out as the only establishment in the region offering authentic Mauritian food. The island nation, located in the Indian Ocean, is renowned for its rich culinary diversity, blending influences from Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, African, and European cuisines. “Basically all the countries that settled on the island,” Suefna said, elaborating on the cultural amalgamation that has shaped Mauritian cuisine.
As the holiday season approaches, the SPICE program’s lead, Natalie Frederick-Wilson, praised Suefna’s holiday-friendly offerings, including “gorgeous” Neapolitan cookies and lamington cakes. Frederick-Wilson emphasized the significance of Suefna’s business in showcasing the program’s mission. “More than anything, we are highlighting that throughout the course of the time that we’ve been here, we’ve brought you so many cuisines,” she stated.
Expanding the Menu and Community Engagement
In 2025, Mo Gato expanded its offerings to include traditional savoury Mauritian dishes, in addition to its sweet treats. The menu now features fried noodles and “melt-in-your-mouth” buttery shortbread cookies. Suefna has successfully integrated her business into the local food scene, providing catering services and participating in shows across the region, as well as maintaining a weekly presence at the Halifax Brewery Market.
Frederick-Wilson also highlighted the inclusivity of the SPICE program, which aims to assist women entrepreneurs regardless of their background. “If they have an idea, if they are looking to grow and scale a business, we can help them,” she affirmed, underscoring the program’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurial spirit among women in Nova Scotia.
As Mo Gato Mauritian Delicacies continues to thrive, Suefna remains dedicated to her mission of sharing the vibrant flavours of Mauritius. Her journey reflects not only her personal aspirations but also the broader impact of supporting diverse culinary traditions within the community.
