Nova Scotia Expands Child Care Programs in 21 Schools

The Nova Scotia government has announced a significant expansion of before and after school child care services, set to take effect for the 2025-26 school year. The initiative will introduce programs in an additional 21 schools across the province, enhancing accessibility for families seeking child care solutions.
Alongside the new locations, the government plans to increase the number of available spaces at existing sites. This expansion aims to create more than 1,200 new spaces, which will accommodate children aged 4 to 12 enrolled in public schools. The program is designed to provide care for students both before classes begin and after they conclude, helping to meet the growing demand from parents.
As part of this initiative, the current school year is expected to see 4,000 spaces operational in over 100 participating schools. This marks a considerable increase from the previous year, which offered 3,000 spaces across 83 school sites. The expansion reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing child care options and supporting families throughout Nova Scotia.
According to the provincial government, this initiative is a response to the rising need for flexible child care solutions as families navigate their work and school schedules. By providing care in more locations and expanding existing programs, the province aims to alleviate some of the pressures faced by working parents.
The child care service is intended to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children, allowing them to engage in a range of activities before and after school. Officials believe that this program will not only benefit families but also contribute positively to the development and well-being of children across the province.
The Nova Scotia government continues to prioritize child care as a critical component of its social services, recognizing its importance in supporting families and fostering community growth. This latest expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance educational and developmental opportunities for young residents, ensuring that all children have access to quality care and support during their formative years.
