Manitoba public schools have significantly increased their teaching staff, adding 832 new funded teacher positions since the New Democratic Party (NDP) assumed office in 2023. This surge represents a 6 percent increase in teaching positions across the province, according to Education Minister Tracy Schmidt.

Details of the Teacher Recruitment Effort

During a news conference held at École DSFM Sage Creek, a newly established school in the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine, Schmidt emphasized the urgent need for more educators, particularly those fluent in French. “We need more teachers here in Manitoba — we especially need more French teachers,” she stated to an audience comprising mainly schoolchildren and educators.

The previous government, led by the Progressive Conservatives, had initiated a strategy in 2021 aimed at recruiting French-language teachers. Collaborating with the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine and the Université de Saint-Boniface, a roadmap has been developed to improve recruitment from 2023 to 2026.

Despite the positive developments, the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine has faced challenges in staffing rural areas. Superintendent Alain Laberge explained that while the division has successfully created 41 new teaching positions over the past two years, no new positions have been added in three of its schools located in Westman. He noted that smaller student-teacher ratios in these schools limit the need for more staff. “Getting teachers in rural areas is difficult for all school divisions, but if you add the speaking French factor, it is harder to find all teachers needed,” Laberge stated.

Growing Enrolment Trends

As of this fall, the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine boasts more than 6,300 registrants, with enrolment rising by 4.4 percent from September 2023 to 2024. This growth aligns with a broader trend in Manitoba’s public school system, which experienced a 2 percent increase in overall student population last year.

The Brandon School Division has also contributed to this upward trend, adding the equivalent of approximately 34 full-time teachers over the last two years. Superintendent Mathew Gustafson reported that enrolment within the division has been steadily increasing, reflecting the overall demand for educational resources in the region.

Looking ahead, the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine plans to expand further, with a new francophone school scheduled to open in Brandon for the 2028-29 school year. This initiative aims to address the growing need for French-language education and to support the increasing number of students in the area.

The ongoing recruitment efforts and strategic planning by the NDP government reflect a commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in Manitoba, particularly for French-speaking students, as the province continues to adapt to changing demographic trends.
