Lakeland Catholic School Division Approves New Courses for Students

The Lakeland Catholic School Division board has approved a new set of locally developed courses aimed at enhancing student engagement and learning opportunities. This decision was announced during a recent board meeting, where Superintendent Sheldon Germain outlined the importance of these courses in supporting diverse student interests.
Germain noted that the board originally approved a significant number of locally developed courses in May. The inclusion of additional courses this year was deemed necessary to further expand the educational offerings available to students. He emphasized the importance of adhering to proper procedures, stating, “We wanted to make sure that we took the right steps and had board approval before we submit them to Alberta Education.”
The newly approved courses cover a variety of topics designed to cater to both practical and creative interests. Among these are courses in tabletop games, forensic studies, and various learning strategies. Each course offers students the opportunity to earn either three or five credits, allowing for flexibility as they explore their passions.
In addition to providing credit opportunities, these courses are structured to enhance students’ learning skills. “They’re actually designed to support our students in developing skills to improve new strategies to help them learn, update their information, and also it gives them a chance to build credits,” Germain explained.
The board unanimously approved the motion, demonstrating a collective commitment to enriching the educational landscape within the division. Following this decision, the courses will now be submitted to Alberta Education for final authorization. If approved, this initiative will open new avenues for students across the division, allowing them to engage in innovative learning experiences.
This move reflects a growing trend among educational institutions to diversify curriculum offerings to better align with student interests and real-world applications. The introduction of these courses marks a significant step in enhancing the educational framework within the Lakeland Catholic School Division, ultimately aiming to foster a more engaging and relevant learning environment.
