How a Job in the Trades Transformed a Young Life Forever
In a heartfelt letter published on November 10, 2025, Rick Royer shared a transformative story about how employment in the trades can profoundly impact young lives. His narrative highlights the potential of vocational opportunities to steer troubled youth away from negative influences and towards a more promising future.
Royer’s experience began in Alberta, where he worked alongside his parents at their glass shop. A couple who frequented their store approached them with concerns about their son, who was struggling with substance abuse and associating with the wrong crowd. Seeking a way to help him regain purpose, they inquired about job opportunities at the shop.
Transformative Power of Trade Employment
After deliberating, Royer and his mother decided to offer the young man a position under the mentorship of a senior glass cutter. This decision proved pivotal. Over time, the youth not only learned the trade but also gained a sense of discipline and self-worth that had been missing in his life. Royer described how this mentorship helped him move away from drugs and negative associations, ultimately leading him to enlist in the military.
“He slowly turned into one of the best kids we ever had work at our shop,” Royer recalled. The young man became a proud and disciplined individual, much to the delight of his parents, who expressed immense gratitude for the positive change they witnessed. Royer and his family felt a profound sense of pride in his transformation.
Tragically, after a few years of military service, the young man lost his life in a car accident caused by another driver. Royer emphasized that while the loss was devastating, the experience was a profound reminder of the potential that vocational training holds for young people. According to him, engaging in a trade provides not only a steady income but also a path to personal growth and stability.
A Call for Change in Policy
Royer’s letter serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of addressing the needs of youth through practical solutions rather than superficial political rhetoric. He commended the article by Klein, which argued that politicians should focus on creating real change in the lives of vulnerable individuals rather than merely discussing compassion. Royer believes that by prioritizing job opportunities in the trades, policymakers can significantly impact the younger generation.
His reflections resonate with many who have witnessed similar transformations. The success stories from trade employment highlight the necessity for broader support systems that encourage young people to pursue vocational careers. Royer’s personal narrative illustrates the profound effects that mentorship and stable employment can have on an individual’s trajectory.
As Royer concluded, it is vital for more voices to advocate for practical solutions that empower young people. By promoting trade skills and creating opportunities, society can help foster a sense of purpose and belonging among its youth, ultimately leading to healthier communities.
