Global Students Gather in Banff for Unique Model U.N. Conference

Students from around the world are converging in Banff, Alberta, this week for the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference, hosted on Treaty 7 territory. The event, spearheaded by MacEwan University alumnus and NMUN Secretary General Ashlee Rolheiser, marks a significant moment in bringing global dialogue to a unique Canadian setting.

Banff’s Significance

In an interview with Alberta Primetime host Michael Higgins, Rolheiser expressed her excitement about the conference’s location. “It feels surreal to be having it here,” she noted, highlighting the transition from an urban environment to the serene mountains. The NMUN conference aims to foster global citizenship among students who are eager to tackle pressing world issues.

Participants represent countries assigned to them six months prior, engaging in discussions across four key committees: the United Nations Environment Assembly, the Human Rights Council, the United Nations Development Program, and UNESCO. Delegates will present research and negotiate solutions on various topics, including critical global challenges such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Broad Participation

The conference attracts a diverse group of students, not limited to future politicians or diplomats. Rolheiser mentioned that participants include aspiring law professionals, healthcare students, and others who are passionate about addressing global challenges. “They want to be engaged and model good global citizenship,” she stated.

One of the core experiences of the NMUN is that students often find themselves representing a country other than their own. This requires extensive research into their assigned nation’s policies, allowing delegates to engage with current events meaningfully. Rolheiser emphasized the importance of being prepared to discuss sensitive and newsworthy topics.

Adapting to Current Affairs

The evolving Canada-U.S. dynamic has posed unique challenges for conference planners. Rolheiser shared that, from a logistical standpoint, the organizing team has had to navigate currency exchanges and tariff differences. “As long as people are open for dialogue, we remain hopeful,” she said, reinforcing the conference’s commitment to fostering productive discussions.

Indigenous Representation

The choice of Banff as a venue also carries cultural significance. Rolheiser highlighted the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in the event’s planning. MacEwan University has embraced the principles of Truth and Reconciliation, ensuring that Indigenous voices are part of the conference. Elders and knowledge keepers will contribute to delegate activities, emphasizing the importance of reciprocity and authenticity.

The planning for this conference has been underway for three years, with the NMUN choosing rotating international locations each year. The previous conference was held in the Galapagos Islands, and next year’s event will take place in Barcelona, Spain. Hosting the event in Alberta is a notable achievement for the region, showcasing its relevance on the global stage.

Rolheiser’s involvement with NMUN has evolved significantly since her time as a student at MacEwan University. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed pride in seeing the passion and dedication of the current delegates. “It’s incredible to witness their commitment to global issues,” she said.

The conference not only enhances MacEwan University’s reputation for transformative education but also reflects ongoing initiatives, such as the Canada-Ukraine project, which has expanded from two schools to twelve, demonstrating self-sufficiency and sustainability in Model U.N. practices.
