Generosity Across Generations: $25K Donation from Douglas Thompson

The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie has received a remarkable donation of $25,000 from the Douglas Thompson Foundation, a gesture rooted in a significant moment over sixty years ago. This donation stems from a $300 grant awarded to Doug Thompson in 1963, which played a pivotal role in supporting his university education.

Doug Thompson approached the Rotary Club for financial assistance during his studies, and instead of a loan, he was granted the funds on the condition that he successfully passed his courses. At the time, Thompson recalled that the entire academic year cost around $2,000, making the grant a substantial contribution to his education.

Years later, while sorting through old belongings, Thompson rediscovered the original letter from the Rotary Club. Signed by Ron K. MacColl, chairman of the youth service committee, the letter extended best wishes for Thompson’s academic success. Reflecting on this moment, he expressed, “I saw the letter and thought, ‘wow, this is kind of historical — I can’t believe I kept this!'”

When the Rotary Club reached out to learn about Thompson’s journey, he shared how their support helped him navigate challenging circumstances. After studying economics, he began his career with Algoma Steel before moving to Windsor and eventually establishing his own business in international steel trading.

“The money was exceptionally helpful for me at the time,” Thompson noted. “My mother was a widow and didn’t have a lot of money, so I’d like to see this donation go towards helping others who faced similar challenges.” This sentiment reflects the spirit of the Rotary Club’s mission to support local students.

The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie has committed to honouring Thompson’s wish by allocating the entire $25,000 donation towards its scholarship program. This initiative aims to empower local students as they pursue their educational aspirations and achieve their dreams.
