First Graduating Class of Dental Therapists from U of S Celebrates Milestone
A significant milestone was reached as the first group of students graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Therapy from the University of Saskatchewan (U of S). This inaugural class, comprising 26 students, began their specialized education two years ago, focusing on addressing dental care needs in underserved areas, particularly in rural and Indigenous communities across Saskatchewan.
Among the graduates, many hailed from Prince Albert and La Ronge, with a total of 20 students completing the full two-year program. The program was designed to accommodate both high school graduates and certified dental hygienists, allowing the latter to enter the program in the second year. This structure reflects a dual-entry approach aimed at maximizing accessibility to the dental therapy profession.
Commitment to Community Health
Dean Dr. Walter Siqueira expressed immense pride in the graduates, emphasizing their dedication and resilience. “These students have demonstrated commitment, resilience, and a strong desire to serve their communities,” he noted. “We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and excited to see the impact they will make across Saskatchewan and beyond.”
The program, initiated in 2023, consisted of six terms over two years, with breaks during the summer months. Among the graduates is Eryka Murray, a licensed practical nurse from Prince Albert. Murray reflected on her journey, stating, “I always loved going to the dentist as a child, and I enjoy working with my hands. Dental therapy was the perfect way to combine those interests.” She appreciated the small class sizes, which fostered a more personalized learning environment.
Another graduate, Kyla Parenteau-Vandale, who began her career as a dental assistant, highlighted the program’s distinctive hands-on approach. “This path allows me to do more for my patients,” she shared. “The amount of hands-on learning and real patient experience we get is the biggest strength of the program.”
Addressing Urgent Needs in Dental Care
Upon graduation, these students will hold the only Bachelor of Science in Dental Therapy degree in Canada. This initiative was developed to meet an urgent demand for dental professionals, especially in remote and rural regions. Gerry Uswak, Director of the U of S Bachelor of Science in Dental Therapy program, remarked on the critical role these graduates will play in the healthcare landscape. “These new grads will fill positions that have been vacant for years across Saskatchewan and Canada, delivering much-needed care in rural and remote communities,” he explained.
As this first class of dental therapists steps into their professional roles, their contributions are expected to significantly enhance access to dental care in areas where it is often lacking. This graduation not only signifies personal achievement for the students but also represents a vital advancement in community health initiatives throughout the region.
